Types of knee replacement surgery

Total, partial or revision

Not every worn knee needs the same surgery. Dr. Acosta recommends the least invasive option that will relieve your pain and last, and sometimes that means no surgery at all.

Surgical options

Knee surgeries Dr. Acosta performs

Total knee replacement

All three compartments of the knee are resurfaced. The most common option for advanced arthritis that affects the whole joint. Available with ROSA® robotic assistance in Monterrey.

Partial knee replacement

Only the damaged part is replaced: the inner compartment (unicompartmental) or the kneecap area (patellofemoral). Smaller incision and more of your own knee is preserved.

Revision knee replacement

Replacement of a previous implant that has worn out, loosened or is causing pain. Complex surgery that calls for an experienced knee surgeon.

Step by step

We start with the least invasive option

Surgery is recommended only when other treatments no longer help.

  1. MedicationTo control pain and inflammation.
  2. Physical therapyGuided exercise to strengthen the knee and recover motion.
  3. InjectionsMedication placed into the joint to reduce inflammation and pain.
  4. Partial knee replacementWhen the damage is limited to one part of the knee.
  5. Total knee replacementWhen the wear is advanced throughout the joint.
  6. RevisionWhen a previous implant needs to be replaced.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which type of surgery I need?

It depends on how much of the knee is damaged, your alignment, your ligaments and your activity level. Dr. Acosta decides with you after reviewing your X-rays or MRI.

How long does a knee replacement last?

Most modern knee replacements last many years. How long yours lasts depends on factors such as your weight, activity and implant positioning. Dr. Acosta will discuss what to expect in your case.

Can a knee replacement be redone?

Yes. A revision replaces an implant that has worn out, loosened or has another problem. It is more complex than a first replacement and needs careful planning.
